In the old days many couples stayed together in very bad marriages, either for the sake of their children or because women had no way of earning a living. In our new society women have a lot more choices and the divorce rate is about 50%. I’m not saying that this is better than it was, but it has a devastating impact on the children involved in these divorces. My parents divorced when I was five years old so I can understand first hand the many hardships involved.

Unfortunately, most of us fall in “love” and marry when we are young and foolish and don’t really give it the serious consideration we should. Our schools do not really teach us how to be good parents or husbands and wives.

I married at 19 and we have made it 49 years so far. Good things can happen to the foolish, smile.

Some states have required marriage counseling and then arbitration to settle cases. The thinking is the husband and wife can depart in a friendlier mood which will help the children, compared to a horrible court case with lawyers making lots of money and everybody being angry with each other.

I’d like to hear some of your ideas on how we can solve differences without divorce.
